Where to Stay in Prague: Why Žižkov Beats Old Town in 2026

Every year, someone books with us, checks the map, and messages reception half panicked because we're not standing next to the Astronomical Clock. Fair question. Here's the honest answer: we're in Žižkov on purpose, and by the second night, most guests get why.

Okay, but where actually is Žižkov?

It's the neighborhood right next to the tourist center, not a forty minute trek out of the city. You'll usually get into the centre in about the time it takes to finish a coffee, a few stops on the metro or one tram ride, depending on where you're headed. It's close enough that "staying in Žižkov" and "staying in the middle of everything" aren't really different things. It's just not dressed up for tourists, which turns out to be the whole appeal.

What Žižkov actually looks like:

Skip the souvenir shops selling the same fridge magnet six times. Žižkov is where Prague goes to have an actual evening: small pubs with regulars who've been coming for twenty years, a genuinely excellent local beer scene, and streets that don't feel like a theme park version of a European city. The Žižkov TV Tower looms over the whole district (yes, the one with the giant crawling baby statues, you'll understand when you see it), and on a clear evening, Riegrovy sady park is where half the neighborhood goes to watch the sunset with a beer from the kiosk. It's not a secret exactly. It's just not on the tour bus route.

Is it safe?

Yes, genuinely, unremarkably safe. Žižkov has an old reputation as Prague's rougher district, left over from decades ago, and it hasn't really matched reality for a long time. Walking back from a bar at night here is no different from walking back from a bar anywhere else in the city. We'd tell you honestly if it weren't. We live here too.

What you'll actually do with your time here:

Eat where locals eat. Žižkov's food scene runs on small, unpretentious places doing one thing well: proper Czech pub food, good coffee, the occasional excellent bakery. We'll point you to our current favorites at check in, because they change less than the guidebooks suggest and are worth more than a Google search.

Drink somewhere with actual character. This is one of the best pub per square metre neighborhoods in the city. You won't need a bar crawl guide here (see our other post on that), you'll just end up somewhere good because it's genuinely everywhere.

Walk up Vítkov hill for a view of the city that most visitors never see, mostly because it never occurs to them to leave the center.

Still get everywhere you actually came for. Old Town, the Castle, Charles Bridge, none of it is far. You're not trading convenience for character here. You're getting both.

Who this neighborhood is for?

If your idea of a good trip involves the same five landmarks every Prague visitor photographs, you'll still get to all of them from here, just without paying the "next to the landmark" markup on your bed.
